Want to get involved in our work? Here’s how!
The results of the 2016 presidential election have shaken many Americans, who are now worried about the future of their country. Metro DC DSA, along with DSA chapters across the country, is ready to defend our civil liberties and human rights, as well as the rights of people of color, women, LGBTQ individuals, immigrants, and all other communities who are fearful of what a Donald Trump presidency, combined with a Republican-controlled House and Senate, will bring. As we seek to protect the gains that we have made to create a more equitable, just society, we will also continue to push for progressive change to further advance the rights of all people.
To achieve these goals, we’ve put together working groups that will continue our momentum, respond to the challenges that lie ahead and engage new members in our community. If you’re interested in getting involved in any of the following areas, or if you have an idea for a new working group that should be formed, we’d love to hear from you!
Racial Justice and Anti-Bigotry Committee
During the campaign, Donald Trump’s rhetoric fueled bigoted organizations like the KKK, the white supremacist National Policy Institute, and countless other racist hate groups. We cannot allow these groups to dehumanize people of color. Rather, we must “make racists afraid again” by championing the movement for racial justice. Even before the election, Metro DC DSA partnered with local racial justice groups, such as ONE DC and Black Lives Matter DC, to fight gentrification and combat racial discrimination. After the election, we will continue to prioritize this work, while also seeking out new ways that we can support people of color in their struggle for equity and justice. If you are interested in joining our racial justice committee, please contact Chris Hicks at email@example.com. You can also view any upcoming events that our racial justice committee is involved in on our events page.
Economic Justice Committee
With threats to privatize and do away with Medicare, Social Security, the Affordable Care Act, and our other already meager social safety net programs, many Americans have perhaps never felt so economically insecure. With the Republican Party controlling the executive, legislative and soon judicial branches of our national government, unions are fearful about their future ability to organize new workers and to protect the gains for workers that they have already achieved. Meanwhile, non-unionized workers across the country are still suffering in insecure employment conditions with substandard wages, if they are fortunate enough to be employed at all! Metro DC DSA is committed to defending the rights of all workers to organize in their workplaces, be paid a living wage, and to retire with a sense of economic security. If you are interested in joining our economic justice committee, please email firstname.lastname@example.org. You can also view any upcoming events that our economic justice committee is involved in on our events page.
Climate Change and Environmental Justice Committee
Central to a socialist understanding of our economy and society is the need for a sustainable future. Capitalism, in pursuit of profits, is draining our natural resources and contributing to climate change. The overwhelming majority of scientists agree that climate change is caused by human activity and that if we do not act now to prevent global atmospheric temperatures from rising, then we will continue to see worsening extreme weather around the world, rising sea levels that threaten the existence of island nations as well as states in the US, and hostile conditions for growing food and maintaining our water supplies. Rather than taking decisive action on this grave problem and listening to scientists, far too many US politicians are paying attention to lobbyists from oil and energy companies that would rather increase their profits than ensure the future of humanity and our planet. Metro DC DSA defends our environment and the rights of the poor, who are disproportionately negatively affected by climate change. If you are interested in joining our environmental justice committee, please contact Andy Feeney at email@example.com. Socialist Feminism Committee
There’s no doubt that women’s rights, especially reproductive rights, are under attack under a Trump administration. Conservatives have been attempting for years to chip away at the gains made for abortion rights under the US Supreme Court’s Roe v. Wade ruling and under the provisions for birth control and other reproductive healthcare under the Affordable Care Act. But women in this country also suffer from a persistent wage gap, sexism in the workplace, and the fear of sexual assault, among other forms of gender oppression. As socialist feminists, we advocate for the rights of women and educate others about the ways in which capitalism and patriarchal culture reinforce each other to contribute to the inequalities that women, especially women of color and trans women, face. If you would like to learn more about the socialist feminist committee, please contact Rachel Paneth-Pollak at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Events and Logistics Committee
Since the election, membership in Democratic Socialists of America has exploded both nationally and locally! Our events and logistics Committee assists our growing chapter in the transition from a small and dedicated group of activists to a mass movement capable of affecting substantive change in the Washington, DC, metro area and nationally. Made up of both enthusiastic new members just becoming involved in progressive politics as well as seasoned members who have been advancing socialism for years, this committee is working to chart the new directions and strategies for Metro DC Democratic Socialists so that we can successfully mobilize our rapidly growing membership. The events and logistics Committee plans protests, marches and rallies around local and national issues and also provides support to our local’s other issue-based committees. If you would like to learn more about the events and logistics committee, please contact Zachary Maril at email@example.com.
We can only be successful in defending our rights if we collectively come together as a movement and demand that our voices be heard. For this reason, outreach is vital to sustaining our opposition to any efforts by Donald Trump and the Republican Party to threaten people of color, disempower workers, restrict women’s reproductive rights or discriminate against the LGBTQ community. Our communications committee is already hard at work on creating materials that will educate the public about the threats to our hard-won rights as well as putting together recruitment literature for DSA. If you have creative or analytic skills that you’d like to put toward growing the Left and advancing social, racial and economic justice, we’d love your help in creating social media content, writing articles for The Washington Socialist and other outlets, keeping our website up-to-date, submitting op-eds and letters to the editor and designing and laying out our local’s new literature. If you are interested in joining the communications committee, please contact Woody Woodruff at firstname.lastname@example.org.
